Procedure Description

Juvederm® dermal filler is a hyaluronic acid (HA) filler FDA approved in 2006 for the treatment of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds to improve skin’s fullness, texture and elasticity.

Juvederm® is a non-surgical, injectable gel used to restore the skin’s volume which age has depleted.  This gel implant consists of cross-linked strands of hyaluronic acid, a natural complex sugar that promotes skin elasticity, providing a smooth and supple appearance.  Once the product is injected into the mid-to deep dermal layer of the face, it lifts and adds volume to the wrinkles and folds in the treatment area.

This product is biocompatible, supplementing the body’s natural hyaluronic acid, and with time will naturally be absorbed into the body.

Juvederm® is offered in two formulations: Juvederm® Ultra, for areas where subtle volume enhancement is required (such as forehead wrinkles, frown lines in between the brow, perioral vertical lip lines), and Juvederm® Ultra Plus, for correction of severely deep folds and wrinkles (such as nasolabial folds, enhancing lip volume, and for reshaping cheek contours).

Just released with FDA approval, Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra+ XC.  The newest addition to the Juvederm collection includes a specialized numbing agent already built-in.  This means that your injection experience will that much more confortable.

Question:

What is the difference between wrinkle correctors like Botox® and Dysport™ compared to injectable fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane®?

Answer:

Wrinkle Correctors and Injectable fillers are considered as non-invasive procedures used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles in men and women. They have been increasing in popularity for those who want to dramatically improve their appearance without undergoing actual surgery.

Botox and Dysport injections use a solution to relax facial muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. They work on the dynamic lines, the lines that move. About two to three days after the BOTOX or Dysport has been injected, results become apparent and can last for three to five months.

Dermal fillers such as Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane are hyaluronic acid based fillers that restore volume in facial lines and wrinkles. They work on the static lines such as the marionette lines, laugh lines, brow lines, and other wrinkles. Most dermal fillers last for about six to nine months.

While Wrinkle Relaxers and Injectable Dermal Fillers work in different ways, both of these treatments are effective in treating wrinkles and helping patients look years younger.

Did this help?

Yes No

The synthetic, biodegradable, FDA approved hyaluronic acid known as Juvederm® is one of the smoothest consistency gels used to reduce the appearance of deep folds and wrinkles.

Juvederm® contains a high concentration of cross-linked hyaluronic acid in the form of a crystal clear gel for long lasting results. Since Juvederm® is biocompatible, there is no risk of allergic reaction and, therefore, no allergy testing needed.

Since no pre-test is needed, the procedure may take from a few minutes to up to 30 minutes depending on the extent of the treatment. It is most often performed after applying a topical anesthetic cream for twenty-thirty minutes, while others prefer an anesthetic block, especially when the lips are being treated. This makes the treatment relatively painless.

Prior to the injections, the injector will first clean the area being treated with an antiseptic and will then select one or more injection points for each location to be treated. The correct amount of product will then be determined.  The Juvederm® filler is then injected underneath the skin surface in the mid to deep dermal layer to correct volume loss, to fill in fine lines, or to sculpt lips. Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance, it will gradually absorb into the body.

Results are noticed right away and are fully evident within one week. The most common side effects are swelling and bruising at the injection site, as well as redness and pain at the injection points. For this reason, it is advisable that no blood thinning medications, such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and Fish oil be taken for at least 5 days prior to treatment to minimize bruising.  Other possible side effects, although rare, include headache, nausea, and flu-like symptoms.  Normal activities can be resumed immediately, though patients are advised to stay out of the sun.

Juvederm® is the only HA filler with FDA approval to last up to one year.  Additional injections and touch-ups may be requested to achieve optimal correction.

COST

The cost of each Juvederm® treatment may vary depending on who is injecting the product (Esthetician, Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician), geographic location, the amount of product needed, and the amount of area to be covered per treatment. Major metropolitan cities often charge higher rates for treatment. Purely cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance. The price per syringe may range from $300 to $1000 per syringe.  If the cost is too much to pay at once, some offices may offer financing options and tips.
